This is my first design tutorial for LCOM. It's a hand-bound jotter book that recycles leftover school supplies. I spent some thing decorating the cover so I love the idea that once the inside pages are filled, I can snip off the threads and rebind it with fresh pages. If you enjoyed this tutorial, I have more here.
Inspiration :
Amy Licht dressed up composition books at KI Memories last month. I used her idea, putting a recycling twist on it. At the end of each school term, kids often have unused pages in their exercise books. I gathered these pages and bound them between decorated covers using a Japanese stab binding technique.

At the end of each school term, kids often have unused pages in their exercise books. I gathered these pages and bound them between decorated covers using a Japanese stab binding technique.
Supplies :
Pattern Papers - KI Memories' Bloom, Pop Culture Dedazzle and Pet Shop Yarn
Embellishments - Maya Road acrylic alphas, Scenic Route ashville label, brads
Effort :
Time - 3 hours
Cost - about S$4 (mostly on decorations for the cover)
Binding :
I used 5.5" x 4.5" papers for my jotter. If you vary the size, adjust the hole positions accordingly. Start by securing the pages with two binder clips and punch 5 holes with an awl.
My sewing sequence is -
- up 7cm hole
- down 4cm hole, around the spine and down 4cm hole again
- up 1cm hole, around the spine and up 1cm hole, around the edge and up 1 cm hole again
- down 4cm hole
- up 10cm hole, around the spine and up 10cm hole again
- down 13cm hole, around the spine and down the 13cm hole, around the edge and down the 13cm hole again
- up the 10cm hole
- down 7cm hole, around the spine and down the 7cm hole again
- Tie a knot at the back to secure
Better still watch Vanilla Joy's video here . Her sewing sequence is different from mine but the end result is the same.
